About the community

Playa Blanca, a fisher peruvian community situated in the north beach of Peru since the 70’s, is one of the most remarkable communities for the team due to our constant communication, learning and participation for 7 years between locals in order to achieve a sustainable community through our wind turbines installation.

How did we get involved

In 2012 due the evident outstanding wind speed in the community, WindAid and some locals started working together by forming board members in order to coordinate the first installation of a 4.0 wind turbine in the primary school. Back then Playa Blanca had around 30 family houses and fishing was and still is the main job to make a living. Electricity did not exist until 2005 when first diesel generators started appearing, they were buying them with their savings but it was extremely expensive in such a way that the majority of them were still using kerosene lights, candles or torches. After a few essays with locals during two years, in 2014 WindAid and locals board members made the decision to install 1.7 wind turbines for each house. In the same year, peruvian government decided to install solar panels in the community due to the perfect radiation energy that Playa Blanca has. Until the end of 2019, WindAid continued the installations and also did diverse activities with adults and kids: educational workshops about renewable energy and the importance of a clean environment, technicians training from basic use of the system to advanced use, board members roles training and system maintenance.

Goals:

  • Provide electricity for all 50 houses in the community

  • Create a connected microgrid and storage system for continuous use

  • Provide education and training on renewable energy technology and maintaining the installed equipment
